What is a Super Visa?
A super visa is a temporary visa given to parents and grandparents of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident. People with a super visa are allowed to come to Canada as a visitor and stay for up to five years without renewing their status. Parents and grandparents with super visas can also apply for an extension if they want to stay in Canada for a longer time.
The Government of Canada has a few eligibility requirements for those who apply for a super visa. One of them states that your parents or grandparents must have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that’s valid for at least one year from their date of entry into Canada. Having super visa insurance meets this requirement.
Why do you need super visa insurance?
Super visa insurance is a type of travel medical insurance plan that you can purchase for your parents or grandparents when they apply for a super visa. This type of insurance helps pay for unexpected medical and dental costs that family members (with super visas) may experience when they come to Canada.
What does super visa insurance cover?
Super visa insurance can cover your parents and grandparents for expenses like emergency hospital and medical bills, as well as:
- Out-of-pocket expenses, such as accommodations and meals, child-care costs, essential telephone calls and taxi fares
- Emergency and accidental dental bills
- Chiropractor and osteopath services
- Podiatrist (foot doctor) services
- Physiotherapy services
- Acupuncture services.
Yes, if your parents or grandparents are not granted a super visa, then you can get a refund if you request it before the policy becomes active. Please note that an administration fee will be subtracted from your refund.
If you cancel your policy for any other reason apart from a visa application refusal, then you’re still eligible for a refund, but you’ll be subject to a larger administration fee.
To be eligible for a Super Visa you must prove that you have sufficient medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company.
Canadian residents may purchase medical insurance on behalf of their visiting family member(s) who are part of the Super Visa program, and should be aware that if they have sponsored their stay, are responsible for their medical bills in the event that they are unable to pay.
To process a Super Visa Medical Insurance refund, you generally need to provide documentation such as the visa rejection letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, proof of the policy purchase, and sometimes communication regarding the cancellation of the trip.
